Silent Hunter 5 is a fantastic submarine simulator game. A great deal of patience and forethought is required to be successful. It requires the player to carefully study the enemy's location and movements, as well as their convoy's routes, in order to successfully complete objectives. It also requires the player to manage resources such as torpedoes and fuel - adding an extra level of difficulty for veterans of previous Silent Hunter games. The realism and sheer scale at which this game operates sets it apart from many other titles in that genre, which often employ arcade-style gameplay or unrealistic physics models. At first glance, Silent Hunter 5 appears unappealing for those who are looking for a quick fix or fast-paced gaming experience. It is neither. Silent Hunter 5 rewards those who are patient and carefully plan their attacks. The game also rewards those who are willing to learn the controls and intricacies of each game feature, rather than relying solely on instinct. This requires a willingness to read the game manual (and indeed understand it) before diving into the game itself; otherwise, much of the game's content will be inaccessible or difficult to master. The game's tutorials are thorough, although they do take some time to play through. The game also offers an auto-explore mode, which is similar to the auto-patrol mode in Silent Hunter 4 (2002). "Auto-explore" can be activated by using an option command or using single press of mouse button ("ALT + SPACE"). When activated the game will continue to search for enemy ships and other objects on the map even if you let go of any mouse buttons. This allows you to concentrate on the game environment itself, rather than having it constantly interfere with your playing. Silent Hunter 5 features a sizeable roster of ships, including destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers. Each ship has a unique feel to it, which adds a lot to the personalised experience of playing this game. The in-game encyclopedia comes in handy for players who want to learn more about particular ships and their additional features. There are over 30 entries for each ship class - with information on the ships' speeds, fuel efficiency, torpedo ranges etc. Some of these can be accessed via the menu system, while some require that you collect them all from the game environment itself. There are three main game modes: Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer. "Campaign", known as "Torpedo Alley" in Silent Hunter 4 (2002), is essentially a series of missions with various objectives; some require the player to sink enemy ships whilst others task them with sinking lesser targets or protecting convoy's ships. Playing through the Campaign mode reveals more about each ship, its capabilities and weaknesses. A new game mode known as 'Naval War' has been added for Silent Hunter 5, which takes into account elements such as weather conditions and even time of day, providing players with a greater challenge than before. cfa1e77820
